So we, at LCFS, we breath fashion, we talk fashion, we eat fashion, we act fashion, and of course we dress fashion!
We want to make this new post a regular one! It's all about styling.

It's easy, while at the college, if and when we spot a student or a teacher or any other fashion creature, wearing anything that is fabulous, inspiring, unique, i.e. attention seeking,  WE IMMORTALIZE THE MOMENT!!!

This week, we spotted the wonderful Miss Thao wearing a colorful tie-dye Lolo inspired scarf,  electric silver heels, and fun patterned crochet black tights

An introduction to Fabric Design

Form – Shape, Colour and Fabric are all important factors, once combined with each other, they create Fashion products. So guess which factor in the fashion product you notice first?

Of course it’s the Form – Shape and Colour which your eyes will notice first. BUT here is the trick, it’s all about the fabric. Fabric isn’t only about the touch, and the look, there is more to it. You need to feel and listen to your emotions when you touch fashion products, you can feel comfortable, happy, free or sad, hurt, even mad, that is so incredible and put Fabric on the top of the pyramid as the best important factor in the Fashion industry.

Nowadays, in the Fashion industry worlwide, brands and designers always research to create unique textiles for their products, to create the difference between other brands and designers.

Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto are Japanese designers who all well-known for creating unique textile by combining traditional and modern technologies.

The Belgian fashion designer. Martin Margiela uses technics constiting of reconstruction and deconstruction by using recycle textile.

Or even the unique and famous Sonia Rykiel, whose well-known for creating guinea-cotton weave, stockinet, elastic shrink.

Using and playing with Fabric helps you to create a unique and recognisable identity and LCFS - London Centre of Fashion Study will help you become this unique textile designer with the exclusive course: Fabric design.

Fabric design is very interesting. You do not have to think a lot about how you would make something, if it is good or bad, do not worry, because you just need to feel comfortable doing it. And even sometimes, you think that  what you’ve created is or looks so ridiculous BUT maybe, it will be your main textile inspiration for your collection.

There are many ways to make your textile as well as there are many inspirations around you.

Printing – Modern technology

Fabric Drawing

Recycle textile - necessary for protecting environment, even you do not have much money to buy new clothing – so great.

So now that you know a bit more! Aren’t you curious?

 Why don’t you try to make something new with your clothes, refresh your closet, and add a special touch to your clothes to make you look unique. And if you really love it, you will find what you’ve made very interesting.  

Last but nor least if you do not know how and where to start, you can visit our College at 48 To Ngoc Van – Tay Ho - Hanoi, Jason Steel – our fabric design teacher will help you and you will be loving the project like us.

Thirsty Thursday #1

Xin Chao fashion students,

I know we are all busy in preparing our final projects, but let's share some words about what happened on November 3, 2011.

The college hall was packed with students, curious and curiouser to learn all about setting up a fashion business in hectic Hanoi. YES! The first edition of Thirsty Thursday was a success.

The guest speakers: The Chula team and Ms. Duyen Huong’s design – the founder of two famous brands L’Atelier and Concept Design.

Diego, an architect turned designer, shared his experience in starting up Chula in Vietnam. He revealed that the combination between Spanish’s colorful designs, embroidery technique and Eastern colorful fabrics created the Chula’s success in Vietnam. He and Laura, his joyful and beautiful wife, make the perfect couple. Their positive energy and undeniable professionalism  is the good recipe behind the success of the brand.

Diego Cortizas and Laura Fonatn – co-founder of Chula shared their experiences with LCFS’ students.

 We also had the chance to meet with Ms. Duyen Huong. As a former LCFS student, she is the perfect example of someone talented and ambitious enough, who took what she learned at LCFS and applied it in the working world. More specially, Ms. Duyen Huong set up her fashion business on what she studied at LCFS. And today, she has made a real name for herself in the Hanoi fashion scene.

Lucky for us, all three, enthousiastically shared their experience, in starting up their fashion brands, with all the ups and down, challenges and problems. The talk was full of useful information, but also life experiences and funny stories, which made it more exciting.


So get out there, you know what to do now. As  Ms. Duyen Huong put it "If you want it, go get it".

And what do WE say?
WE WANT MORE!! And cannot wait for the second edition of Thirsty Thursday!

LCFS Tie-Dye Class/ Tiết học nhuộm vải tại LCFS

     Hi there! It’s Nicky from the LCFS bloggers crew, how are you all? Today we’re gonna bring up a very exciting topic – tie-dye! As we all know, tie-dye is a well known technique of treating fabrics, and enhancing their appearance with just a few simple process. Recently in our college, the LCFS Hanoi, we had a tie-dye work shop with Miss. May Cortazzi (our lovely design lecturer), and I would like to share the experience with you all!

Các bạn biết đấy, kỹ thuật nhuộm vải nổi tiếng này rất hữu ích, nó có thể thay đổi hoàn toàn màu sắc vải trên bề mặt vải bằng một vài thao tác đơn giản. Thời gian này, chúng tớ đang học môn này với cô May Cortazzi (cô giáo dạy môn thiết kế dễ thương của chúng tớ), và tớ rất thích được kể với các bạn về "trải nghiệm" này.

   In the beginning of the lecture we were taught the basics about tie-dyeing, a technique of dyeing fabric using strings, thread or elastic bands. By tying the fabric with those props, parts of the fabric are blocked from the dye and remain in their natural colors. It was in vogue in the 60’s due to the rising movement of the hippie subculture. 

Vào đầu tiết học, chúng tớ được dạy kiến thức cơ bản về nhuộm vải, kỹ thuật nhuộm vải mà có sử dụng các dây buộc, chỉ hoặc dải băng co giãn. Bằng cách buộc vải thành những nút thắt, một phần bề mặt vải sẽ không tiếp xúc với thuốc nhuộm và vẫn giữ được màu gốc. Loại vải màu này rất thịnh hành vào những năm 1960 khi văn hóa hippie nổi lên.

      Beside the western techniques there is also Shibori, interesting tie-dye techniques from Japan. They use thread and needle to create pattern on the fabric then pull all the thread to one side, creating gathering effect to block parts of the fabric from getting dyed.  

Bên cạnh kỹ thuật nhuộm vải phương Tây, cũng có phương pháp nhuộm vải Shibori từ Nhật Bản. Họ sử dụng chỉ và kim để tạo hình mẫu trên vải rồi kéo tất cả chỉ về một phía, tạo thành khu vực riêng biệt không bị ảnh hưởng bởi thuốc nhuộm.

      Alright! Enough with the introduction, now comes the fun part! (and perhaps dirty) With May’s instructions, we got to try seven different techniques of tie dying, from the classic western circular, checked pattern to the advance shibori.  

Xong! Quá đủ với phần giới thiệu, bây giờ là phần vui vẻ ( có lẽ hơi nhòe nhoẹt). Với sự hướng dẫn tận tình của cô May, chúng tớ đã thử làm cả bảy kỹ thuật của nhuộm vải, từ kiểu nhuộm vòng tròn truyền thống của phương tây tới kiểu nhuộm cao cấp Shibori.

         What a great tutorial! I bet you would like to make some of your own too right? Well, you definitely can! Just get some 100% cotton fabrics, scissors, tough tying string, needle, thread and some fabric dye of your choice (make the dye mixture, base on the instructions on the package.) Now for the pattern, basically you just need to tie the fabric before you get them dyed. For the circular pattern, pinch the fabric at one point and let it fall naturally. From that point use string or elastic band to tie the fabric at different part. For the checked pattern, fold the fabric up to little square then tie it up. For the shibori, use needle and thread to create a pattern of your choice with loose stitch, then pull the thread end at one side. Soak them in water before dip them into your dye and keep them overnight. By the next day they are ready to get washed and dried. Voila! That’s all it takes to create a handmade printed fabric. And you know what the best part is? Nobody has the same one as you! Fashion-wise, lots of contemporary brands such as Blumarine, Proenza Schouler, Calvin Klein and Ports 1961 have used tie dye as an inspiration for their collections. So what are you waiting for? Put your gloves on get to work!

Thật là một buổi học tuyệt vời. Tớ cá là bạn cũng thích tự nhuộm vải phải không? Thiệt tình, bạn hoàn toàn có thể mà. Chỉ cần lấy vải cotton 100%, một sợi dây chắc chắc, kéo, chỉ, kim và một vài màu nhuộm (tự trộn hỗn hợp màu nhuộm dựa trên hướng dẫn ở bao bì ấy). Và bây giờ là phần mẫu nhuộm, về cơ bản, bạn chỉ cần buộc vải trước khi nhuộm chúng. Đối với mẫu nhuộm vòng tròn đồng tâm, chọn một điểm và bó chặt vải tại điểm đó, phần còn lại để vải trải tự nhiên. Từ điểm đó, sử dụng dây hoặc dải băng co giãn buộc chặt phần khác của vải. Đối với mẫu nhuộm ô vuông, gập vải thành những hình vuông nhỏ rồi buộc nó lại. Đối với cách nhuộm Shibori, sử dụng kim và chỉ tạo thành những mẫu theo ý thích của bạn, khâu thô lại rồi kéo chỉ về một phía. Ngâm vải trong nước trước khi nhúng vào thuốc nhuộm rồi giữ qua một đêm. Ngày hôm sau đem giặt và phơi khô vải. Thế thôi! Đó là tất cả kỹ thuật nhuộm vải thủ công. Và bạn biết phần gì là tuyệt nhất không? Không ai có thể làm ra tấm vải giống bạn được. Thời trang rất khôn ngoan đấy nhé, rất nhiều hãng thời trang hiện nay như Blumarine, Proenza, Calvin Klein và Ports 1961 đã từng lấy cảm hứng từ nhuộm cho bộ sưu tập của họ. Vậy thì bạn còn đợi gì nữa, đeo găng tay vào và làm thôi.

Yesterday, we, year 1 term1, went on a mission for Jason's design class.

The objectif: to create the perfect customer profile!

We went to Hanoi's Old Quarter, we had to take pictures of things, people and places that inspire us, then based on all those photos, present our future customer to the whole class.

The whole experience was interesting and fun, and I think everyone enjoyed it!

A visit to the Museum of Ethnology

As part of our Cultural Studies class, we took a trip to the Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi. The museum houses all the secrets and tradition of the 54 ethnic minorities of Vietnam.

Not only does this Museum have an excellent outdoor display, the interior is excellent as well!

It has a large collection on display of objects for daily use, like knives and baskets, agricultural tools, fishing instruments, musical instruments used by the different ethnic groups in Vietnam. Everything related to various religious customs, ritual weddings and funeral ceremonies, is also kept there.

More importantly for fashion students like us, the museum holds a clothing and jewelery collection from all ethnic minorities. It is fascinating how they still use ancient weaving techniques to create their apparels. 

Then outside the museum building, on the museum grounds, are reconstructions of various huts of ethnic tribes that you can go inside and check out. Some have decorations and instruments that you can try out.

So do not always listen to the common beliefs, YES museums can be FUN!

Chuyến tham quan tới Bảo tàng Dân tộc học là một phần trong môn học “Culture Studies” – Nghiên cứu văn hóa thời trang của chúng tôi. Bảo tàng chứa đựng rất nhiều thông tin về truyền thống và những bất ngờ thú vị về 54 dân tộc thiểu số Việt Nam.

Bảo tàng Dân tộc học không chỉ có cách bài trí không gian ngoài trời hoàn hảo mà các vật dụng được  trưng bày bên trong cũng rất tuyệt vời.

Trong bảo tàng có trưng bày một bộ sưu tập lớn các vật dụng sử dụng hàng ngày như dao, gùi, nông cụ, dụng cụ đánh bắt cá và các nhạc cụ của các dân tộc khác nhau. Tất cả những thứ liên quan đến những phong tục tín ngưỡng, tập tục cưới hỏi hay tang lễ cũng đều được trưng bày tại đây.

Điều quan trọng hơn đối với các sinh viên học về thời trang như chúng tôi là những bộ quần áo, bộ trang sức của các dân tộc thiểu số. Cách họ sử dụng những kỹ thuật dệt thô sơ để tạo nên những bộ trang phục thật là kỳ diệu.

Bên ngoài khuôn viên của bảo tàng có rất nhiều nhà sàn của các dân tộc thiểu số được dựng lại. Bạn có thể đi vào trong và tham quan chúng, cũng như tham quan cách trang trí của nhà sàn và các công cụ có trong đó.

Niềm tin mà chúng tôi luôn có là Bảo tàng dân tộc học là một địa điểm cực kỳ thú vị.
